  • You can now create new work items on a remote RTC server from within RAM. You can do this either through a custom attribute or in a forum post. You still must have credentials on the remote RTC server.

Work item preview

  • Work item previews are now embedded in the page, instead of being displayed as a popup. This allows you to view more than one work item at a time. When hovering over a work item link, a plus icon will appear. Clicking that icon will open a section showing the details of the work item.

To see some of these new features in action and to see how RAM can be used as a Definitive Software Library with Rational Team Concert and your Eclipse based IDE check out this demonstration by Dr Gili Mendel.  The viewlet shows how technical assets (services & J2EE Ear/War) can be developed with RAM.

You must download and extract the files in the zip file.  Click on the file ram711_sp1_viewlet_swf.html  You can view the file with Internet Explorer or Firefox.

The team was really excited to see this eWeek article.  A good sign of a product’s usefulness is when the company that develops it also uses it.   This eWeek article shows how RAM is being used as a Definitive Software Library for the entire IBM Software Community.  The article describes how IBM is getting value by doing community development and using Rational Asset Manager as a definitive software library.  “We’re saving the corporation hundreds of millions of dollars.” The article says that it is being used by 30,000 software developers.  What isn’t stated is how another 70,000 business users in the organization are also using Rational Asset Manager.  Rather than using the Eclipse Client,  business users use the Rational Asset Manager “Web 2.0” client to manage their business assets.    By seeing how these business assets relate to technical assets teams are better able to find the assets they need and understand their impact on the business.

Over the last couple of months I have been using milestone releases of Rational Asset Manager v7.1.1.   As I was using it I kept saying to myself, “Wow I really like the new features in this release.”    Rational Asset Manager v7.1.1 is being made available today.   It is the sixth release of the product.   I think  it is one of the best releases we have had so far.   We have been listening to our customers and have delivered what they have asked for.  Customers are using Rational Asset Manager to manage their distributed assets across many repositories.  This latest release will allow you to federate across other repositories like Microsoft Sharepoint,   Web servers,  FTP servers,  Cloud computing web based service providers and other Web URL accessible servers that have your assets.    In this release you can search for, use, govern and report on your assets across these and other federated repositories.  Here were the themes of this release and the corresponding capabilities and benefits
